Derek is setting up a field trip for Tuesday, October 29, 2013 at the old St. Patrick church on Brunswick St. in Halifax.

Photo show: The pictures from the floral workshop were shown. Great pictures came from the workshop.

PRESENTER / WORKSHOP EVENING TOPIC: George Mitchell – Macro Photography of insects.

Technical issues discussed were: magnification, depth of field, camera type, lens focal length, camera settings, tripod flash and focus rail, and stacking.

Compositional ideas included: Sun and shade, action, background, perspective. Autofocus is best for hand held cameras but manual focus is best for tripod camera work.

George gave a great talk on equipment including: camera’s /length/  /macrolights/focus rail/ and other equipment.  He explained that extension tubes increase magnification but at the cost of less light and limited range of focus.

He used pictures to show how too much sun is not always good and how low light is sometimes the best. Many of his pictures were from the Public Gardens in Halifax. Insects shown included grasshoppers, wasps, bees, spiders, leafcutter ant, butterflies, mantis, dragon flies, damsel flies, beetles and flies.

Sara thanked George for a great evening of pictures and insight into taking pictures of insects.

Refreshments by Derek Johnston.

Meeting ended at 9:45.      Next meeting on November 12, 2013.
